The North Valley Arts Council Presents the 2010 Annual Arts Awards and Silent Art Auction
It has been an outstanding year at the North Valley Arts Council (NoVAC). NoVAC events attracted more than 35,000 people to downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks to participate in events such as Art Fest, the Art and Democracy Film Series, and the Art and Wine Walk, the latter of which we collaborate on with the Greater Grand Forks Convention and Visitors Bureau. The audiences attracted by these programs brought more than $7 million to the Greater Grand Forks area. NoVAC also launched several new programs, including the Mayor’s Choice artist program and our Brown Bag Lunch Series for artists, and we are working with UND and the Grand Forks Mayor’s Office on the new Artist in Residency program. Our Re-Grant Program, funded by the City of Grand Forks, provided sixteen area arts organizations with a much-needed total of $96,000 to fund events ranging from the 41st Annual UND Writers Conference to the Myra Museum’s Legends of Terror Haunted House. The events funded by NoVAC’s Re-Grant Program brought many more thousands of people to the area and provided an additional economic benefit to the cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.
After all the hard work, we are excited to celebrate the arts community’s past achievements and to look forward to the future season. The North Valley Arts Council invites you to attend Celebrate the Past, Welcome the Future: The 2010 Annual Arts Awards and Silent Art Auction on Thursday, September 23, 2010 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Empire Arts Center, located at 415 Demers Avenue in downtown Grand Forks. The general public is encouraged to attend and help honor the outstanding individuals and businesses that made 2010 such a terrific year for the arts and who promise to make 2011 even better.
2010 Annual Arts Awards: “Celebrate the Past, Welcome the Future”
The North Valley Arts Council initiated the Annual Arts Awards in 2006 to honor those individuals who most actively produce quality art, and to show appreciation for members of the community who support the production of art through their volunteerism, financial contributions, purchase of art, and attendance at arts events. At the 2010 Annual Arts Awards, NoVAC will continue this tradition by honoring the people who made 2010 such an excellent year for the arts. During the awards, the North Dakota Ballet Company, Fire Hall Theater and an ensemble from the Summer Performing Arts Company will perform selections from their upcoming seasons.
The 2010 award recipients are:
Alvin O. Boucher will receive the Artist of the Year award. This award recognizes extraordinary artistic achievement with gift of $1,000, underwritten by the Grand Forks Herald. Al is a functional and sculptural potter and has his ceramic work in a number of public and private collections, including regional exhibitions. He is the President of Muddy Waters Clay Center, a local non-profit clay center, as well as one of its founders. Al is also a frequent pottery teacher at the University of North Dakota and for the Grand Forks Public Schools Adult Education program.
Marlys Murphy will receive an Individual Supporter of the Arts award in recognition of her extraordinary support of area arts organizations and artists. Marlys has served as an accompanist for countless performances at almost every performing arts organization in the greater Grand Forks community, including Summer Performing Arts, UND Theater, Bel Canto Studio, Crimson Creek Players, Fire Hall Theatre, and area schools.
The Grand Forks Herald will receive a Corporate Support of the Arts award in recognition of its extraordinary support of the arts. The Grand Forks Herald, under the leadership of editor and publisher Mike Jacobs, generously donates thousands of dollars and in-kind advertising donations to the Greater Grand Forks arts organizations. Going above and beyond his corporate financial support, Mike also served as President on the North Valley Arts Council Executive Board. His term was up in 2009.
Ken Sherwood will receive an Outstanding Achievement Award for his extraordinary dedication to the arts in Greater Grand Forks. In 1992, Ken retired from an admirable career in the Red River High School music department. Since then, he has donated thousands of hours of his time and expertise to the Summer Performing Arts Program, the Central and Red River music departments, and the extracurricular musical productions at Red River High, Central High, and South Middle Schools. Countless voice students and teachers in the Grand Forks area have come to know this inspiring, caring and knowledgeable man as “Grandpa Sherwood.”
Previous award recipients include: Artist of the Year: Kathleen Coudle-King (2009), Michael Blake (2008), Job Christenson (2007) and Adam Kemp (2006); Individual Support of the Arts: Tamar Read (2009), Jean Holland (2008), Bruce Gjovig (2007) and Tom Edwards and Jackie McElroy Edwards (2006); Corporate Support of the Arts: Dakota Harvest Bakers (2009), Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops (2008), Sanders 1907 (2007) and Hugo’s (2006); and Outstanding Achievement: Benjamin Klipfel (2009), Laurel Reuter (2008), Lee Barnum (2007) and the late Carol Graham (2006).

HIGH SCHOOL ART DONATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR THE
2010 NORTH VALLEY ARTS COUNCIL'S ANNUAL SILENT ART AUCTION:
High school art submissions are now being accepted for the 2010 Annual Arts Awards and Art Auction. The event is held by the North Valley Arts Council (NoVAC) to honor the artists, arts organizations and businesses that have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the regional arts community. The Art Auction is a fundraiser for the North Valley Arts Council, which uses the money to fund local arts projects and organizations.
Submissions will be:
- By any student who was in high school during the 2009-2010 school year or who will be in high school during the 2010-2011 school year.
- In any visual art medium.
- Priced under $100 at the silent auction. (Pieces may go above $100 if bid on.)
A jury will select 10 high school art pieces to sell at the silent auction. High school artists will receive 50% of the final auction price of the artwork, and the North Valley Arts Council will provide free framing for the artwork.
NoVAC’s marketing of the event will provide the artists chosen with media exposure on the radio, in the Grand Forks Herald, and in other public ations and programs. The North Valley Arts Council will also pair the chosen high school artists with experienced local artists as mentors. The emerging artists will experience the pleasure of showing their artwork to a crowd of more than 200 arts patrons, and their artwork will hang alongside the art of established artists. Through this initiative, NoVAC hopes to provide emerging local artists with a professional arts experience that will serve them if they choose to pursue visual arts as a career.
