2013 Featured Artist: Dave Sonnek, Sonnek Metal Art
Dave Sonnek grew up in southern Minnesota on the family farm with 20-25 head of dairy cattle and around 300 acres of farmland. He went to college at Mankato State University, where he received his B.S. in Management and Economics, and later his MBA. He moved to the Minneapolis area for 10 years where he worked as a controller and later as a home mortgage loan officer. He moved back to his home town of Mapleton in the fall of 2007, firstly because the crash of the mortgage industry, and secondly because he missed the small town environment and wanted to be closer to his parents at the home farm.
It was there that he started to work in his father’s shop making a few art pieces in his spare time. He really enjoyed this, and decided to take a few of his pieces to a local art fair. It took off from there. He started Sonnek Metal Art in the spring of 2009 and now attends 12-15 art shows a year across the upper midwest.
His work consists of recycled metal that is found at the local scrap yard and then is turned into garden art through various processes, including cutting, forging and welding. Each piece is hand-made in his shop, and he now has around 25-30 different pieces available for sale each show. Items include anything from flowers and butterflies, to birds, cows, cats, pigs and one-of-a-kind pieces.
